Sowing and caring for hollyhocks
Hollyhocks are sown in seed trays from March to April. Before germination, the seeds require a temperature of around 18°C; afterwards, the young plants should be cultivated at approximately 15°C in the brightest possible location.
As soon as there is no longer any risk of frost, the young plants can be moved outdoors. Hollyhocks prefer a sunny location and thrive best in well-drained soil. Regular fertilization promotes flowering and prevents hollyhock rust. Deadhead spent flower stalks promptly. Hollyhocks also need winter protection to survive the cold season. Alternatively, the seeds can be sown directly outdoors or in pots in autumn so that the plants will flower the following year.
Harvesting hollyhocks and cutting them for a vase
For a vase, use fully opened flowers, cut during their peak blooming season in summer. Using sharp garden shears, cut the stem below the last flower and remove any remaining leaves. Immediately place the stems in a bucket of hot water, otherwise they will wilt quickly.
