Sowing and caring for cosmos

Sowing takes place indoors between February and April. Grow the seedlings in individual pots or containers until they are large enough to plant out. Before planting out, harden them off by occasionally placing them outdoors (when there is no longer any risk of frost). Cosmos can also be sown directly from May onwards.
Pinching back the stems when the plant is about 30 cm tall encourages bushier growth. Cosmos may need staking during the growing season. Water regularly and remove faded flowers to prolong the flowering period.

Harvesting cosmos flowers and cutting them for a vase

For optimal vase life, cut cosmos flowers when the buds are just beginning to break open and are not yet fully open (for double varieties, when they are about half open). The best time to cut them is in the morning. They will last approximately 5 to 7 days in a vase.
