Sowing and caring for dahlias
Sow indoors in trays or pots 4 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Sowing indoors takes place between February and April. Cover the seeds only lightly with soil. Dahlias tend to germinate only sporadically, so patience is required. Wait to sow seedlings in the garden until the weather is consistently warm (from about May/June onwards). Direct sowing of dahlias is not recommended.
Harvesting and cutting dahlias for a vase
Cut the blooms regularly. Dahlias hardly open again after harvesting, so it's important not to cut them too early, but when the blooms are about three-quarters open. The best time to cut them is in the morning. They will last for about 7 days in a vase.
