Sowing and caring for California poppies
Sowing indoors takes place between February and April. Cover the seeds only lightly with soil and plant them out after the last frost. Alternatively, you can start at the end of February/March (in colder regions, it's best to start indoors in a cool but bright location and then plant them directly outdoors from the end of March/April). Direct sowing outdoors is also possible. Germination can be accelerated by placing the seeds in the refrigerator for a week before sowing, as Cool Flowers require this period of cold. Regularly remove faded blooms. Regular pruning prolongs the flowering period. A sunny location is essential.
Harvesting and cutting California poppies for a vase
Cut flowers for a vase while they are still in the colored bud stage. Individual blooms may only last 3 to 4 days, but as they fade and the petals fall off, new buds open immediately. The best time to cut flowers is in the morning when it is still cooler. They will last for about 8 days in a vase.
