Planting irises
The ideal time to plant tall bearded irises is either in spring or autumn. The location should be sunny and sheltered, with rather dry and well-draining soil. The rhizomes are placed in a hole 10-20 cm deep, ensuring that the top of the rhizome protrudes slightly from the soil. Bearded irises should be planted in groups of at least three, with a planting distance of approximately 25 cm.
Care for Iris
Bearded irises are exceptionally robust and easy to care for. They tolerate heat and drought particularly well and require very little maintenance after planting. Fertilizer should be used sparingly, as too many nutrients can inhibit growth. Tall bearded irises are completely winter-hardy and therefore survive our local winters very well. However, in very low temperatures, it is advisable to cover them with a layer of mulch, such as leaves.
Harvesting irises
The flowers should be fully open for harvesting. The stems are cut approximately 10-15 cm above the ground. After harvesting, it is important to place the bearded irises in a vase immediately, ideally in a cool room away from direct sunlight.
