Sowing and caring for zinnias

Sow indoors between February and April. Cover the seeds only lightly with soil. Plant out only when there is no longer any risk of frost. In late spring, zinnias can also be sown directly into the garden bed. Zinnias have sensitive roots, so planting them directly in a pot is preferable. Do not overwater. Regular pruning will prolong the flowering period.

Harvesting zinnias & cutting them for a vase

The "wiggle test" tells you if a zinnia is ready to harvest. To do this, grasp the stem about 8 cm below the flower and gently shake it: If the stem goes limp or bends, it's not yet ready to harvest, but only when it remains firm and upright. It will last for about 7 days in a vase.
