The tall bearded iris (Swiss flag iris) is the undisputed star of the iris family, with its magnificent blooms in spectacular colors that encompass the entire spectrum of the rainbow and often even appear tricolored. It also blooms at a crucial time: after the tulips have finished flowering, but before the annuals and perennials really get going, it perfectly fills the gap. Personally, I can never tire of its extraordinary flower shape, which seems both exotic and familiar; it's a true classic in the cottage garden.
But one characteristic also makes it a plant of the future: unlike roses, dahlias, or peonies, it is very drought-tolerant. And if it doesn't even rain in Hamburg in the summer anymore, we all know that we will have to adapt our gardens more to this change in the future. The tall bearded iris thrives best planted in well-draining soil in full sun (its rhizome should protrude slightly from the soil to "bake" in the sun). I prefer to plant them in groups of three in the foreground to fully appreciate their splendor.
