3 Reasons Why Sowing Cool Flowers in Autumn Is Easier Than in Spring Many people always think of spring when sowing flowers. However, autumn is a much better time for many varieties, and beginners often find it much easier. Here are three reasons why you should definitely start your Cool Flowers indoors this autumn: 1. No Space Problems in the House In spring, you need plenty of space at home, bright windowsills, or artificial light for the seedlings to thrive. In autumn, this is completely unnecessary; sowing takes place directly outdoors, without a living room full of seedling pots. 2. Robust Seedlings Naturally Spring sowings need to be gradually acclimated to the outdoors. In autumn, nature takes care of this automatically: The seedlings grow outdoors from the very beginning and are therefore robust. 3. Almost No Care Required No fertilizer, hardly any watering. The plants form a rosette of leaves over the winter, overwinter robustly, and start flowering the following early summer, often as early as May – significantly earlier than anything sown in spring. The easiest way to grow flowers from seed: Simply sow Cool Flowers outdoors! After one heat wave after another this summer, the weather has finally become bearable again across Germany – here in Hamburg, it's even turned quite autumnal. Now is the perfect time to sow your Cool Flowers! These are hardy annuals that will bloom before all other summer flowers next spring and are perfect for you if you don't have a good spot indoors for sowing in the spring. Here's how: 1. You'll need a multi-cell tray, potting soil, and a somewhat sheltered, bright spot in the garden. 2. Sow the seeds directly into the pots of the multi-cell tray and keep the soil slightly moist for the next few weeks. Soon your little plants will sprout! 3. Once the pots have developed good roots, simply plant them in your flower beds (Note: There are also varieties that should be sown directly into weed-free, loose soil: poppies, nigella seeds, and annual delphiniums). Now, no further work is required. The seedlings don't need fertilizer, and the autumn weather is usually moist enough for them to continue thriving. Sowing this way is essentially much easier than in spring. In my experience, a good location is crucial. Plant in really good, weed-free soil and consider your local climate. To kick off the season, we've selected three particularly beautiful new varieties for you, which I'd like to briefly introduce here. Antirrhinum majus 'Twinny Peach' F1 (Snapdragon): A gorgeous snapdragon with a compact growth habit. It reaches a maximum height of 40 cm, making it perfect for container planting. Matthiola incana 'Column Lilac Lavender' (Flybean): This enchanting florist variety impresses with long, sturdy stems and large, wonderfully fragrant blooms. Lathyrus odoratus 'Miss Willmott' (Sweet Pea): A historic sweet pea in shades of pink and apricot, which, with support, proudly climbs over 2 meters. September to-dos for your garden! Autumn is approaching, and now is the perfect time to get active in the garden! This month, you should buy flower bulbs and plan and plant your perennial beds. Sowing cool flowers, i.e., hardy annuals, is also a good idea now, so you can have a head start on blooms in spring. Don't forget: mulching protects the soil from the cold and saves work in spring. Dahlias will appreciate an extra dose of fertilizer, a pruning, and plenty of water.
