Sowing & caring for cosmos
Sow indoors between February and April. Grow the seedlings in individual pots or containers until they are large enough to plant out. Harden them off before planting out by placing them outside from time to time (when there is no longer a risk of frost). Cosmos can also be sown directly from May.
Pinching when approx. 30 cm tall promotes bushier plants. Cosmos may need to be supported during the growing season. Water regularly and remove wilted flowers to prolong the flowering period.
Cutting cosmos for the vase
For ideal vase life, cut cosmos when the buds are just bursting open and have not yet fully opened (for double varieties: when they are about half open). The best time to cut them is in the morning. The vase life is about 5 to 7 days.
