The iris is very glamorous and easy to care for at the same time and indispensable to bridge the time between tulip blossom and summer perennials in the garden. Looks great with meadow chervil or bronze fennel.

Planting instructions

Planting irises

The ideal time to plant the tall bearded iris is either in spring or autumn. The location should be full sun and sheltered, the soil rather dry and well-drained. The rhizomes should be placed in a hole 10-20 cm deep, with the top slightly protruding from the soil. The bearded irises should be planted in groups of at least three, with a planting distance of approx. 25 cm.

Caring for irises

Bearded irises are exceptionally robust and easy to care for. They tolerate heat and drought particularly well and require hardly any care after planting. Fertiliser should be used sparingly, as too many nutrients can inhibit growth. Tall bearded irises are absolutely hardy and therefore survive our local winters very well. In very low temperatures, however, it is advisable to cover them with a layer of mulch, e.g. leaves.

Harvesting irises

The flowers should already be fully open for harvesting. The stems are cut off approx. 10-15 cm above the ground. After harvesting, it is important to place the bearded iris in a vase immediately, preferably in a cool room out of direct sunlight.
