Sowing and caring for hollyhocks

Hollyhocks are sown in seed trays from March to April. Before germination, the seeds need a temperature of around 18°C, after which the young plants should be cultivated at around 15°C in as bright a location as possible.
Once there is no longer any risk of frost, the young plants can be moved outside. Hollyhocks prefer a sunny location and thrive best in well-drained soil. Regular fertilization promotes flower formation and prevents hollyhock rust. Remove dead flower stems promptly. Hollyhocks also need winter protection to get through the cold season. Alternatively, the seeds can also be sown directly outdoors or in pots in the fall so that the plants begin to flower the following year.

Harvesting hollyhocks & cutting them for vases

Fully open flowers cut during the main flowering season in summer are suitable for vases. Use sharp garden shears to cut the stem below the last flower and remove the leaves from the stem. Immediately place the stems in a bucket of hot water, otherwise they will wilt quickly.
