The 10 best seed varieties for beginners
Robust summer flowers that forgive mistakes
These flower seeds are particularly robust and are forgiving of a mistake or two when growing. That’s why they’re ideal for anyone sowing seeds for the first time!
Cosmos ‘Cupcake Blush’ & ‘Apricot Lemonade’ & ‘Rosetta’ (Cosmos)
All cosmos are the ideal flowers if you have no experience yet. Already in the ground they are the first to germinate, the fastest to grow and even after a few days without water and brown leaves they have picked themselves up again in the bed and come to bloom. They also come in beautiful colours, bringing lightness and joy to the bed! And if you prune them regularly, cosmos will bloom until the first frost!
Nigella damascena ‘Miss Jekyll’ (Love-in-a-Mist)
An incredibly delicate yet absolutely hardy variety that also likes to seed itself in the bed. The delicate sky blue is never overbearing, it goes well with almost any colour. In addition, the Love-in-a-Mist is one of the few that blooms in partial shade and that I also sow directly in the weed-free bed. As a “cool flower” it even tolerates frost! A tip: For a long flowering period reseed every three weeks directly in the bed.
Limonium ‘Qis Apricot’ & ‘Qis Pastel’ (Annual Statice)
The Annual Statice has never disappointed me either. The great thing about it is that it tolerates drought and heat quite well and is one of the best companion flowers in bouquets. There’s something nostalgic about it that I love. And on top of that, it’s by far the best flower to dry. We have it in a beautiful apricot and soft pastel purple in our assortment.
Helichrysum brac. ‘Salmon Rose’ and ‘Silvery Rose’ (Strawflower)
I discovered strawflowers later, and am completely enamored of them. I’m particularly taken with the salmon one. It blooms in an incredibly beautiful, warm spectrum of colours and tolerates drought quite neatly, too. If you keep cutting the long stems, it will give us flowers until the first frost. And also like annual statice, it is my very favorite dried flower.
Nicotiana alata ‘Lime green’ and ‘Grandiflora’ (Ornamental Tobacco)
This is the most underrated of all summer flowers for me. I love the soft green of ‘Lime green’, which goes well with hydrangeas, as well as the pure white of ‘Grandiflora’. What’s so special about ornamental tobacco? It blooms incredibly. For months. Even if you totally neglect it, don’t fertilize and prune. Plus, it’s my favorite plant to plant in the gaps of fresh perennial beds. The broad ground-hugging leaves prevent weed growth better than any weed killer, and the elegant, shimmering clouds of flowers bring lightness to the bed. It’s the only plant that occupies an entire two multi-pot plates in my seeding. You can’t have enough ornamental tobacco in the garden!
